A long list is easy to read and hard to remember. Begin with a small set you can describe in your own words. Choose a region you already know something about, so each new place has a familiar neighbor. Use this routine: look at a map, read one fact, close the source and recall it. Then check your answer. You can do the exercises with this website, a paper atlas or country profiles in the app. A suggested pace ### 10 minutes Five minutes to explore. Three to recall. Two to check and choose your next question. ## Your first week of geography Repeat a day whenever you want. The goal is to build connections you can explain, rather than race through a set number of countries. 1. Day 01 ### Build your mental map. Name the six continent groups used in the app: Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America and Oceania. Notice Antarctica separately. Different school systems group continents differently, so use one convention consistently during this exercise. 2. Day 02 ### Choose five neighbors. Pick five countries from one region in the directory. Find their relative positions and notice which share land borders or nearby seas. Close the map and describe where each sits. 3. Day 03 ### Give each name a flag. Open the flag guide and choose five examples. Describe the layouts out loud. Compare a similar pair and identify one detail that helps you tell them apart. 4. Day 04 ### Add the capitals. Choose five country–capital pairs. Read them once, cover the answers, then write what you remember. Check the list and give the missed pairs another look. 5. Day 05 ### Read one country story. Pick Japan, Brazil or Türkiye. Read its essentials and geography notes. Write three facts in your own words and one question the guide made you curious about. 6. Day 06 ### Make a comparison. Compare two countries by capital, currency, flag and geographic setting. Use the profiles for reference. If you use Atlas AI, ask one focused question and check its answer against the country facts. 7. Day 07 ### Retrace your discoveries. Begin with the names and capitals from earlier sessions. Try recalling them before reopening the guides. Choose the three items you found hardest and make them the start of your next week. ## A simple activity for students, teachers and families Choose three country names and assign one to each learner or group. Ask each to find the country on a map, draw or describe its flag, name its capital and write a question about it. Let the group present its findings before everyone tries to recall the capitals. Adapt the amount of reading to the learners. Use [the capital recall cards](https://www.smartworldmap.com/learn/countries-and-capitals/) as a short check, and [the labelled flag gallery](https://www.smartworldmap.com/learn/flags-of-the-world/) as a visual reference. For a screen-free extension, make your own paper cards from the facts you learned. ## Measure what you can explain. 01 ### Locate it. Can you name the continent or region and describe one nearby country or sea? 02 ### Recall it. Can you recognize the flag and name the capital before looking at the answer? 03 ### Connect it. Can you explain one fact in your own words or compare the place with another? When an answer slips away, use it to choose your next exercise. Revisit the difficult pair, explain its cue, and try again during a later session. ## A few good questions **Do I need to memorize every country at once?** No. Start with a small group and build outward. Neighboring countries and related flag designs give you connections to work with. **Can I follow this plan without downloading an app?** Yes. The country directory, guides, flag gallery and capital recall cards are available on this website. An app or paper atlas is useful for continuing your study. **What should I study after the first week?** Begin your next session with the facts you found hardest to recall. Then choose a neighboring region or a new flag comparison and repeat the routine with a small set of countries. Smart World Map & Countries resource library · Updated 10 October 2026.
