Language entries introduce the main language; they do not describe every language spoken in the country. ## Put the country on your mental map. Türkiye connects southeastern Europe with western Asia. When reading a map, notice the country’s European and Asian parts rather than treating a continent label as its whole geographic story. The website directory follows the preview dataset’s Western Asia grouping. Ankara is the capital of the Republic of Türkiye. The official [GoTürkiye guide to Ankara](https://goturkiye.com/ankara) introduces its museums, cultural institutions and local food. Studying the capital gives you a useful perspective alongside the better-known visitor stories about Istanbul. Look beyond the label ### A geographic crossroads How can a country belong to the geographic story of both Europe and Asia? ## A flag you can describe from memory. ![Flag of Türkiye](https://www.smartworldmap.com/assets/flags/countries/tr.svg) Flag of Türkiye Türkiye’s flag has a white crescent and star on a red field. Use the crescent-and-star arrangement as your visual cue, then compare it with Japan’s red-disc design to see how different symbols and backgrounds create distinct identities. Istanbul is a separate city whose setting connects Europe and Asia. The city name you know best is not always the answer to the capital question. When you study a country, separate the city’s role from its familiarity. Make a pair on your notes: the country name on one side, its capital on the other. Test it before opening the answer in [the capital practice guide](https://www.smartworldmap.com/learn/countries-and-capitals/). ## Make this country part of your next five minutes. Find Ankara and Istanbul on a map. Identify the capital, recall the currency, then describe the flag in one sentence. Follow up by locating the country’s European and Asian parts. In Smart World Map & Countries, open the country profile to continue reading or listening with Read Aloud. Country facts are stored on your phone. With an internet connection, ask Atlas AI a follow-up question about a region, culture topic or comparison you want to explore. For a useful AI prompt, try: “How can a country belong to the geographic story of both Europe and Asia? Explain it for a geography beginner.” Compare the response with the profile and an official source, then write what you learned in your own words. ## A few good questions **What is the capital of Türkiye?** Ankara is the capital of Türkiye. **Is Türkiye the same place as Turkey?** Yes. Türkiye is the name used in this guide; Turkey remains a common English name for the same country. **Is Türkiye in Europe or Asia?** Türkiye spans both Europe and Asia. The website preview directory groups it under Western Asia; that label does not describe the full geographic context. ## Sources and further exploration - [GoTürkiye](https://goturkiye.com/ankara) — official destination information supporting the capital and regional context in this guide. - [GoTürkiye’s official destination guides](https://goturkiye.com/) — an additional official reference for your next question. - [world-countries](https://github.com/mledoze/countries) — the source of the website’s essential country facts, distributed under [ODbL 1.0](https://www.smartworldmap.com/assets/COUNTRY-DATA-LICENSE.txt). - [flag-icons](https://github.com/lipis/flag-icons) — the flag artwork, used under its [MIT license](https://www.smartworldmap.com/assets/flags/LICENSE.txt).
